Neuromas
Treatment of Neuroma
There are various ways of treating a Neuroma, some of these include;
- Changing footwear from tight-fitting to loose-fitting and ensuring footwear is not too small.
- A simple off-the-shelf orthotic can support the arch and reduce the load on the neuroma.
- Strengthening the foot muscles and stretching tight calf muscles can help reduce pressure on the neuroma.
- A referral to a podiatrist can help with more complex cases. Custom-fitted orthotics can help rebalance the forces in the forefoot and reduce pressure on the Morton’s neuroma.

Insoles (orthotics) can be helpful for treating neuromas.
- They may redistribute pressure away from the neuroma.
- Insoles with a metatarsal pad (met pad) can provide relief
- Properly designed insoles can lesser or relieve a neuroma

Further Treatment
Podiatry
If the self help measures fail a referral to a Podiatrist will be required where more specific insoles can be made or steroid injections can be considered if appropriate.
Steroid injections are meant to shrink the size of the neuroma in order to reduce pain. They are an effective treatment
Surgery
If conservative measures fail surgery could be considered to remove the nerve. This would be a discussion to have with your health care professional.
Go to A&E immediately if:
- Your ankle or foot that has changed shape or is at an odd angle.
- You heard a snap, grinding or popping noise at the time of injury.
- You are not able to walk.
- Your calf is red, hot, tight and/or swollen which may also be tender to touch.
- you have foot pain and feel generally unwell and have a high temperature or feel hot and shivery.
Pain medication
Pain medication may help to manage the pain, allowing you to keep mobile. Speak to a pharmacist or your GP for further advice.
