Cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar neuropathy)
Dealing with Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
The good news is that the majority of cases resolve with time. This can take many weeks, but often many months to settle. For those people with more limiting symptoms and those wanting to limit the impact as well as speed up recovery, the following treatments are available.
- Modifying use such as leaning on your elbow less and using hands free equipment when using the phone to limit long periods of bending the elbow.
- Exercises can offer some help (see here for some ideas). These generally aim to move the nerve back and forth through the tunnel at the elbow.
- Resting splints. Some recommendations include using splints at night that limit how much you can bend your elbow. Do not wear splints continually otherwise you will get a stiff and weak elbow/forearm.
- If this is not successful and especially if you have more significant symptoms such as high level of pain with weakness, you may be referred to see a specialist.
- Further treatments that can be considered include surgery for the most severe cases.
